This sweet, charming, and comfortable barn conversion cottage rental in County Limerick, dates from the 1600’s and offers up a totally unique, historic and affordable accommodation experience for travelling in Ireland. It’s one of those favorites, that we love returning to again and again.

The Adare Stone Barn self-catering cottage is nicely decorated with warm wood floors, simple Irish craftsman furniture, beautiful watercolors (done by the owner, an accomplished artist) and presents a nice mix of bright and muted colors throughout. This vacation property also gives a great separation of space for individuals or two couples travelling together, with each of the two bedrooms and bathrooms located on opposite sides of the long narrow cottage, the sitting/dining room between them.

Just outside the postcard-worthy village of Adare, this an Irish holiday home that meets several of our requirements for a simply elegant holiday: it is an historical property, in a central touring location, close to a friendly village, with unbelievably kind owners, thoughtful furnishings, perfect for couples or small families with two good sized bedrooms and two bathrooms.

Positioned at a right angle to the Thatched Farmhouse right next door, it can be rented alone and maintain a sense of privacy, or together, for a large and wonderful accommodation for groups travelling and exploring the central and west of Ireland.

Main Room/Dining

Enter from the front garden patio into the main living/dining room of the Barn cottage (it really was a barn where the livestock was kept by the family who lived in the adjacent farmhouse for  generations – it has been in the same family now for over 300 years). This combined sitting and dining room has coral walls and tall ceilings, two comfortable loveseat sofas and a large armchair.

The coffee table is a rustic wood, next to a great fireplace. A side table holds the rarely-watched television (because everyone is either out enjoying themselves or sitting by the fire chatting, reading, or recapping a wonderful day out!) and many books. In the dining area, there is a cupboard with additional books and a nice wood table that seats 4 – 6, with high-backed woven chairs.

There is a loveseat built into the front windowsill of the room – where we sat to get the best mobile phone reception when we last stayed here – and small window built into the thick barn wall, demonstrating the depth and insulation of the stout building.

Kitchen

To the right of the main room/dining room is the galley kitchen: cute, compact & efficient, with stove, oven, fridge/freezer, and a dishwasher next to the farmhouse sink. There is a picture perfect view out to the pastures through the kitchen window. It is well supplied with kitchen necessities and amenities, and though on the small side, over the years we’ve cooked tasty meals here, with two people working nicely side-by-side in the cozy workspace.

Bedrooms/Bathrooms

Two good size bedrooms, one en suite and one with adjacent bathroom.

The ensuite bedroom, to the left of the sitting room if facing the cottage, is the smaller of the two but still plenty spacious, with wood floors, a Queen size bed, bedside tables, antique loveseat, wardrobe closet and window seat. The en suite bathroom has a shower stall. 

The larger bedroom, to the right of the sitting room, past the kitchen and adjacent bathroom, has a King/Twin bed that can be made up as either two Twins or large King. There is a large wardrobe and a dressing table, as well as a window seat with views out to the lush back garden.

The adjacent bathroom features fish printed wallpaper (it’s terrific, really), pedestal sink and a large shower stall. 

There are wall heaters in each room and the hallway. The barn cottage stays cozy, even when the fire dies down. 

Garden & Grounds

The Stone Barn sits perpendicular with the nearby Thatched Farmhouse, behind tall hedge walls that separate the holiday houses from the rest of the property, a working farm. The stone cottage enjoys lovely gardens and a paved patio/porch area with table and a barbeque. The owners keep a fine property, with tidy fences, roads and paths around the place.

Next to the Farmhouse is a utility room with large sink, checkerboard floors and a shared Washer & Dryer. There is a also a storage area for wood and peat for the fires, to which you are welcome to help yourself if the stacks run low in your holiday house.

Location

The Adare Stone Barn cottage is located on a beautiful piece of farmland, with cows and horses in the near distance, just a short distance from the heart of Adare village. While it’s possible to walk the mile and a half into Adare, to all the shops and restaurants of the village, the lane to the main road is quite busy, and unlit at night, so not recommended. Cabs are an easy and inexpensive way to travel back and forth for a night out of fun. There is also a nice pub in the nearby country hotel across the road, perfect for a nightcap or a round of pints after dinner. All in all, this is nice place to be, and an easy spot from which to base for touring the West of Ireland.
